What to see & do

Punakaiki and Barrytown are located in the heart of the Paparoa National Park. It is internationally recognized as being on of the "Must see Highways of the World". It is geographically sited around the Punakaiki Pancake Rocks which are the icon of the West Coast.

The area has so many types of activities derived from the natural formation of the area: fishing, tramping, canoeing, horse treks, forest walks, caving and climbing, arts and crafts, gemstone hunting, surfing and specifically photography.

There are licensed restaurants and eating houses, arts and craft shops etc. Other attractions:

  • Shantytown - An authentic 1880 gold town with 30 buildings on display, attractions, gold panning, steam train etc. Licensed cafe and bar open daily.


  • On Yer Bike - The ultimate in quad bike tours, mud plugging, go-carts, argo adventures, mini bikes, cafe on site and protective clothing available.


  • Knife making, Barrytown locally situated.


  • BoneIdol - Bone Carving, Barrytown location.


  • Camping - A fully serviced camping ground available at Punakaiki.


  • Air Services - Flights 5 days a week from Greymouth to Westport, Wellington and return.


  • Helicopter Scenic Flights - Available, please ask.


  • Jade Factory - Location, Weld Street, Hokitika, manufactures of ornaments and jewellery.


  • Shade of Jade - Greymouth, offering crafted jade ornaments and jewellery.


  • The activities and attractions are so numerous, but it is also enjoyable just relaxing with a book or a tinny.
